As the song goes into its refrain, the guitar presence turns purely melodic, just a swirl of breeze in the midst of the keys, and the feeling is equal parts pleasant and melancholy. Combined with the gentle, lilting vocals of Frode Forsmo, the feeling is quite relaxing, guitars crunching along without becoming either a focus or a distraction. Kjetil Ottersen was by this point a permanent keyboard player and layers the music with piano and synths from the off, not always obtrusively, but giving a definite classical flavour to opener ‘This Barren Skin’, which starts off with a choir. That’s ideal for multi-tasking when writing sad, personal poetry, but is it enough to get my praise too?Īs someone who used to write sad, personal poetry, I can tell you it’s pretty good, though not musically as rich or as heavy as I’d prefer. (Sadly, the Norwegians would lose guitarist Christian Loos to suicide before the album was released.) That makes it smoother and more melancholy than truly savage in its emotions, leaving it to become a 100% goth album, able to retain introspective mournfulness throughout its entire 57 minutes (65 with the bonus track). The pace is still slow on From These Wounds, though reaches mid-pace much more easily than in the band’s early days, as well as opening the sound to much more melody and wistful reflection rather than suicidal depression.

The death growls departed, as did a string of male and female vocalists, meaning that 11 years on from the debut, a four-piece – only half of whom played on the debut – pulled out the third Funeral album. However, they tend to be so smooth that either the songs simply sail past without leaving any impression, or, worse still, conceal their horrible construction and musicianship in overwhelming atmosphere.įor starters, Funeral had left the heaviness of funeral doom far behind, practically abandoning it in the long period following debut full-length Tragedies.

Listeners craving that slightly hopeless, slow goth style will lap up those albums because they seem perfect at a glance: full of atmosphere, tearful melodies, and tuneful, sorrowful vocals. Other albums approximate to this style include: My Dying Bride’s Songs of Darkness, Words of Light, Lacrimas Profundere’s Memorandum, and EverEve’s earlier work. I mean that it’s a certain kind of album that people who are really into gothic atmosphere would give 100% to. By which I don’t mean that it’s totally goth or that it’s perfect.

You see, this is nearly a 100% goth album. In a way, I’m really surprised at the review scores for From These Wounds, though, in another, I’m kind of not.
